OTTAWA – Speculation ran rampant among Canada’s chattering political-punditry classes on Wednesday morning that Elon Musk could conceivably be the country’s next Prime Minister. The buzz was fueled by the rumour that the tech billionaire had been chosen as the next leader of Canada’s federal Green Party.
Musk’s elevation from mere billionaire to potential leader of a G7 country is no doubt derived from his ambitious super-green initiatives like the electric car, the mass-transit Hyperloop and the escalator-trolley-belt tunnel for vehicles.
The surprise nomination was the result of a write-in poll of the Green Party membership that was conducted as part of a succession-planning exercise. Elon Musk received 98% of the write-in vote. Other names on the nomination list also included Mike Myers, Rachel McAdams, William Shatner and Vladmir Putin.
A commenter on the Green Party’s Facebook page summed up the collective sentiment of the membership regarding the organization’s unusual choice for its next leader.
“When I was a kid I used to believe in the tooth fairy and when I woke up there was always a prize under my pillow. So maybe the magic will work again.”
